Web 2.0: Building a Library Website with Blogger

If you need a library site that makes your life easier, not more difficult, building a simple site using Blogger might be the right solution for you. Using Blogger, you will quickly have a Web presence for your library that is easy for you and all of your fellow staff members to contribute to. Class participants are strongly encouraged to have library photos, information, and any other items they’d like to include on their site available in a digital format (on a flash drive, on a Website, or emailed to themselves). At the end of this three-hour workshop, each participant will have a working site for their library.

Building a Library Website with WordPress.com

If you need a library site that makes your life easier, not more difficult, building a simple site using WordPress.com might be the right solution for you. You will quickly have a Web presence for your library that is easy for you and all of your fellow staff members to contribute to. Class participants are strongly encouraged to have library photos, information, and any other items they’d like to include on their site available in a digital format (on a flash drive, on a Website, or emailed to themselves). At the end of this three-hour workshop, each participant will have a working site for their library.

How to decide between Blogger and WordPress.com:
Both Blogger and WordPress.com are excellent platforms for building a simple, easy-to-update library Website. Blogger tends to be a little easier for the novice blogger to use and it offers a wide selection of site features. The primary difference between the two is that WordPress offers a feature called “pages.” Pages are not available on Blogger. By using pages, you can create a site that opens to a static set of library information, instead of to the blog posts. If this is an important feature for your site to include, WordPress.com is then recommended over Blogger.

Installing WordPress.org

WordPress.org is free open source software that can be installed on your own (or hosted) server. Hosting the software yourself allows for more control and customization of the site. During this four-hour advanced-level workshop participants will install WAMP (server) software and WordPress.org, learn to install free themes and plugins, and how to back up the data and software.
