In the past, I’ve had a problem using a Vista PC to load titles to my iPod Touch.
Background: I typically sync the iPod Touch to a Macbook. In order to get WMA titles on the iPod, I need to use a PC. I’ve successfully used two other PCs running XP to transfer titles. For some reason, I received error messages stating that the title could not be transferred to the iPod when using the Vista PC. This error message occurred when I tried to transfer any title to my iPod Touch or to a fellow coworker’s PC-formatted iPod Nano.
Here’s what worked for me:
- I updated my iTunes software. It’s always a good idea…
- I completely uninstalled the OverDrive Media Console.
- And reinstalled the OMC.
- I deleted the audiobook files from my computer.
- Windows Explorer >> [My] Documents >> My Media >> WMA Audiobooks >> audiobook files
- Opened Internet Explorer and deleted my browsing history.
Now, I was skeptical that this would work. Why? Two things: I had already tried to uninstall and reinstall the OMC. Also, I don’t use IE and have IE8 already set to “Delete browsing history on exit.” Nonetheless, I was finally able to successfully transfer a title to my iPod.
Let me know if this works for you!

Bobbi,
I am trying to transfer my WMA audio books to my iphone using your above instructions. However, when I use the transfer OMC software on a PC, it will not work unless I allow it “manage my iphone manually” which then requires me to format my iphone and sync with the windows library.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Nick
Thanks for your question, Nick. Here is my experience with my iPod Touch. I use my Mac to sync my Touch. I’ve always manually managed my music and video so when I connect to a PC to transfer audiobooks, the PC “knows” that the Touch normally does a manual sync and doesn’t try to override my current content.
Are you normally syncing with a Mac and using a PC to transfer audiobooks? If so, try setting the “manually manage music and videos” while your iPhone is connected to your Mac. After plugging your iPhone into the PC also set iTunes to manually manage the music and videos.
I should note that the ability to transfer audiobooks using a PC to a Mac formatted iPod can only be done to a iPhone and iPod Touch. A “click wheel” Mac formatted iPod will require reformatting.
I hope this helps (and sorry for the late reply).
Bobbi
Bobbi,
Thanks for the info. Unfortunately I still cannot sync my iPhone with the PC. I restored my iPhone with my Mac and selected the “manually manage music and videos”, but still the pc will not let me select this feature without erasing my library. I did however find a work-around. If I do allow the pc to erase my music, then I can transfer my audio book to my iPhone. I can “restore from back-up” my iPhone to my mac, where it surprisingly does not delete my audio book, but now allows me to transfer music from my mac to my iPhone. Not the most elegant way, but it works.
Thanks again,
Nick
Sorry to hear that your iPhone doesn’t seem to work with the service the same way my Mac-formatted iPod Touch does, Nick. I’m disappointed that iTunes on the PC won’t let you select the “Manually manage music and videos” setting when the iPhone is initially connected to the computer without automatically erasing the data. That setting has come up a few times in the workshops I teach and I’ve always been able to immediately select the setting before a true sync happens. (It might look like it’s starting to sync, but doesn’t really.) If you ever have the opportunity, try connecting another iPod to the PC and see if you can’t get that setting changed. Be sure to warn the iPod owner of the risk of their data getting erased!
I’m sorry that you’ve experienced these issues, but am glad you’re able to enjoy the audiobooks now!
Bobbi
Nick, I found your post interesting since I’ve experienced something similar. Would you please explain what you meant when you wrote ” I can ‘restore from back-up’ my iPhone to my mac,” Do you mean you restored your iPhone from a back-up on your Mac? Sorry if this seems self-evident, but I’m having a hard time understanding which way the information is flowing!
Thanks.
